Morning Prayer

Tuesday in Holy Week

Opening Sentence

Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow which was brought upon me, whom the Lord has afflicted. Lamentations 1:12

Confession of Sin

BCP p. 79/116

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

ost merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought,
word, and deed,
by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name.
Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Invitatory and Psalter

BCP p. 80

V:Lord, open our lips.
R:And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 95 Venite, exultemus

BCP p. 724

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

1

ome, let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

2

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

3

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.

4

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.

5

The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

6

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *

Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

8

Harden not your hearts,
as your forebears did in the wilderness, *

at Meribah, and on that day at Massah,
when they tempted me.

9

They put me to the test, *
though they had seen my works.

10

Forty years long I detested that generation and said, *
“This people are wayward in their hearts;
they do not know my ways.”

11

So I swore in my wrath, *
“They shall not enter into my rest.”

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

Psalm 6 Domine, ne in furore

BCP p. 589

1

ORD, do not rebuke me in your anger; *
do not punish me in your wrath.

2

Have pity on me, Lord, for I am weak; *
heal me, Lord, for my bones are racked.

3

My spirit shakes with terror; *
how long, O Lord, how long?

4

Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; *
save me for your mercy’s sake.

5

For in death no one remembers you; *
and who will give you thanks in the grave?

6

I grow weary because of my groaning; *
every night I drench my bed
and flood my couch with tears.

7

My eyes are wasted with grief *
and worn away because of all my enemies.

8

Depart from me, all evildoers, *
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.

9

The Lord has heard my supplication; *
the Lord accepts my prayer.

10

All my enemies shall be confounded and quake with fear; *
they shall turn back and suddenly be put to shame.

Psalm 12 Salvum me fac

BCP p. 597

1

elp me, Lord, for there is no godly one left; *
the faithful have vanished from among us.

2

Everyone speaks falsely with his neighbor; *
with a smooth tongue they speak from a double heart.

3

Oh, that the Lord would cut off all smooth tongues, *
and close the lips that utter proud boasts!

4

Those who say, “With our tongue will we prevail; *
our lips are our own; who is lord over us?”

5

“Because the needy are oppressed,
and the poor cry out in misery, *

I will rise up,” says the Lord,
“and give them the help they long for.”

6

The words of the Lord are pure words, *
like silver refined from ore
and purified seven times in the fire.

7

O Lord, watch over us *
and save us from this generation for ever.

8

The wicked prowl on every side, *
and that which is worthless is highly prized by everyone.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Lesson Jeremiah 15:10-21

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah.

oe is me, my mother, that you ever bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. The Lord said: Surely I have intervened in your life for good, surely I have imposed enemies on you in a time of trouble and in a time of distress. Can iron and bronze break iron from the north? Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.

Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take me away; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight of your hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail. Therefore thus says the Lord: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the Lord. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

13. A Song of Praise Benedictus es, Domine

BCP p. 90

Song of the Three Young Men, 29-34

lory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

The Second Lesson John 12:20-26

A Reading from the Gospel According to John.

ow among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-
kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our creation,
