Morning Prayer

Monday after the Third Sunday after Pentecost

Ephrem of Edessa, Syria, Deacon, 373

Opening Sentence

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.Philippians 1:2

Confession of Sin

BCP p. 79/116

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

ost merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought,
word, and deed,
by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name.
Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

R:And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

Psalm 95:1-7

The earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

ome, let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

The earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

The earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *

Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

Psalm 56 Miserere mei, Deus

BCP p. 662

ave mercy on me, O God,
for my enemies are hounding me; *

all day long they assault and oppress me.

2

They hound me all the day long; *
truly there are many who fight against me, O Most High.

3

Whenever I am afraid, *
I will put my trust in you.

4

In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust and will not be afraid, *

for what can flesh do to me?

5

All day long they damage my cause; *
their only thought is to do me evil.

6

They band together; they lie in wait; *
they spy upon my footsteps;
because they seek my life.

7

Shall they escape despite their wickedness? *
O God, in your anger, cast down the peoples.

8

You have noted my lamentation;
put my tears into your bottle; *

are they not recorded in your book?

9

Whenever I call upon you, my enemies will be put to flight; *
this I know, for God is on my side.

10

In God the Lord, whose word I praise,
in God I trust and will not be afraid, *

for what can mortals do to me?

11

I am bound by the vow I made to you, O God; *
I will present to you thank-offerings;

12

For you have rescued my soul from death and my feet from stumbling, *
that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

Psalm 57 Miserere mei, Deus

BCP p. 663

1

e merciful to me, O God, be merciful,
for I have taken refuge in you; *

in the shadow of your wings will I take refuge
until this time of trouble has gone by.

2

I will call upon the Most High God, *
the God who maintains my cause.

3

He will send from heaven and save me;
he will confound those who trample upon me; *

God will send forth his love and his faithfulness.

4

I lie in the midst of lions that devour the people; *
their teeth are spears and arrows,
their tongue a sharp sword.

5

They have laid a net for my feet,
and I am bowed low; *

they have dug a pit before me,
but have fallen into it themselves.

6

Exalt yourself above the heavens, O God, *
and your glory over all the earth.

7

My heart is firmly fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; *
I will sing and make melody.

8

Wake up, my spirit;
awake, lute and harp; *

I myself will waken the dawn.

9

I will confess you among the peoples, O Lord; *
I will sing praise to you among the nations.

10

For your loving-kindness is greater than the heavens, *
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

11

Exalt yourself above the heavens, O God, *
and your glory over all the earth.

Psalm 58 Si vere utique

BCP p. 664

1

o you indeed decree righteousness, you rulers? *
do you judge the peoples with equity?

2

No; you devise evil in your hearts, *
and your hands deal out violence in the land.

3

The wicked are perverse from the womb; *
liars go astray from their birth.

4

They are as venomous as a serpent, *
they are like the deaf adder which stops its ears,

5

Which does not heed the voice of the charmer, *
no matter how skillful his charming.

6

O God, break their teeth in their mouths; *
pull the fangs of the young lions, O Lord.

7

Let them vanish like water that runs off; *
let them wither like trodden grass.

8

Let them be like the snail that melts away, *
like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.

9

Before they bear fruit, let them be cut down like a brier; *
like thorns and thistles let them be swept away.

10

The righteous will be glad when they see the vengeance; *
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.

11

And they will say,
“Surely, there is a reward for the righteous; *

surely, there is a God who rules in the earth.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Reading

Eccles. 7:1-14 (NRSV)

A Reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death, than the day of birth. 2It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for this is the end of everyone, and the living will lay it to heart. 3Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of countenance the heart is made glad. 4The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. 5It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools. 6For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of fools; this also is vanity.

Surely oppression makes the wise foolish, and a bribe corrupts the heart. 8Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; the patient in spirit are better than the proud in spirit. 9Do not be quick to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools. 10Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

Wisdom is as good as an inheritance, an advantage to those who see the sun. 12For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to the one who possesses it. 13Consider the work of God; who can make straight what he has made crooked? 14In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; God has made the one as well as the other, so that mortals may not find out anything that will come after them.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

9. The First Song of Isaiah Ecce, Deus

BCP p. 86

Isaiah 12:2-6

urely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.

Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.

And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;

Make his deeds known among the peoples; *
see that they remember that his Name is exalted.

Sing praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, *
and this is known in all the world.

Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, *
for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Reading

Matt. 15:21-28 (NRSV)

A Reading from the Gospel According to Matthew.

esus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

lmighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-
kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
