Evening Prayer

Tuesday after the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Opening Sentence

Worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him. Amen.Psalm 96:9

Confession of Sin

BCP p. 79/116

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

ost merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought,
word, and deed,
by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name.
Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Invitatory and Psalter

V:O God, make speed to save us.
R:O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

O Gracious Light Phos Hilaron

BCP p. 118

gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 36 Dixit injustus

BCP p. 632

1

here is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart of the wicked; *
there is no fear of God before his eyes.

2

He flatters himself in his own eyes *
that his hateful sin will not be found out.

3

The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; *
he has left off acting wisely and doing good.

4

He thinks up wickedness upon his bed
and has set himself in no good way; *

he does not abhor that which is evil.

5

Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, *
and your faithfulness to the clouds.

6

Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,
your justice like the great deep; *

you save both man and beast, O Lord.

7

How priceless is your love, O God! *
your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.

8

They feast upon the abundance of your house; *
you give them drink from the river of your delights.

9

For with you is the well of life, *
and in your light we see light.

10

Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, *
and your favor to those who are true of heart.

11

Let not the foot of the proud come near me, *
nor the hand of the wicked push me aside.

12

See how they are fallen, those who work wickedness! *
they are cast down and shall not be able to rise.

Psalm 39 Dixi, Custodiam

BCP p. 638

1

said, “I will keep watch upon my ways, *
so that I do not offend with my tongue.

2

I will put a muzzle on my mouth *
while the wicked are in my presence.”

3

So I held my tongue and said nothing; *
I refrained from rash words;
but my pain became unbearable.

4

My heart was hot within me;
while I pondered, the fire burst into flame; *

I spoke out with my tongue:

5

Lord, let me know my end and the number of my days, *
so that I may know how short my life is.

6

You have given me a mere handful of days,
and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight; *

truly, even those who stand erect are but a puff of wind.

7

We walk about like a shadow,
and in vain we are in turmoil; *

we heap up riches and cannot tell who will gather them.

8

And now, what is my hope? *
O Lord, my hope is in you.

9

Deliver me from all my transgressions *
and do not make me the taunt of the fool.

10

I fell silent and did not open my mouth, *
for surely it was you that did it.

11

Take your affliction from me; *
I am worn down by the blows of your hand.

12

With rebukes for sin you punish us;
like a moth you eat away all that is dear to us; *

truly, everyone is but a puff of wind.

13

Hear my prayer, O Lord,
and give ear to my cry; *

hold not your peace at my tears.

14

For I am but a sojourner with you, *
a wayfarer, as all my forebears were.

15

Turn your gaze from me, that I may be glad again, *
before I go my way and am no more.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Reading

James 2:14-26 (NRSV)

A Reading from the Letter of James.

hat good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder. 20Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith apart from works is barren? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. 23Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

15. The Song of Mary Magnificat

BCP p. 91/119

Luke 1:46-55

y soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him *
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, *
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, *
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,

On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

BCP p. 101/125

lmighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-
kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our creation,
preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;

but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;

for the means of grace,
and for the hope of glory.

And,
we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips,
but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,

and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

to whom,
with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages.
Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

BCP p. 102/126

lmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.2 Corinthians 13:14
