Morning Prayer

Friday after the Seventh Sunday of Easter

Augustine, First Archbishop of Canterbury, 605

Opening Sentence

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Amen.Colossians 3:1

Confession of Sin

BCP p. 79/116

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

ost merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought,
word, and deed,
by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name.
Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

Invitatory and Psalter

BCP p. 80

V:Lord, open our lips.
R:And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Alleluia.

Christ our Passover Pascha Nostrum

BCP p. 83

1 Cor. 5:7-8; Romans 6:9-11; 1 Cor. 15:20-22

lleluia.
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; *

therefore let us keep the feast,

Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, *
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia.

Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; *
death no longer has dominion over him.

The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; *
but the life he lives, he lives to God.

So also consider yourselves dead to sin, *
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia.

Christ has been raised from the dead, *
the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

For since by a man came death, *
by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die, *
so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia.

Psalm 102 Domine, exaudi

BCP p. 731

1

ORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry come before you; *
hide not your face from me in the day of my trouble.

2

Incline your ear to me; *
when I call, make haste to answer me,

3

For my days drift away like smoke, *
and my bones are hot as burning coals.

4

My heart is smitten like grass and withered, *
so that I forget to eat my bread.

5

Because of the voice of my groaning *
I am but skin and bones.

6

I have become like a vulture in the wilderness, *
like an owl among the ruins.

7

I lie awake and groan; *
I am like a sparrow, lonely on a house-top.

8

My enemies revile me all day long, *
and those who scoff at me have taken an oath against me.

9

For I have eaten ashes for bread *
and mingled my drink with weeping.

10

Because of your indignation and wrath *
you have lifted me up and thrown me away.

11

My days pass away like a shadow, *
and I wither like the grass.

12

But you, O Lord, endure for ever, *
and your Name from age to age.

13

You will arise and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to have mercy upon her; *

indeed, the appointed time has come.

14

For your servants love her very rubble, *
and are moved to pity even for her dust.

15

The nations shall fear your Name, O Lord, *
and all the kings of the earth your glory.

16

For the Lord will build up Zion, *
and his glory will appear.

17

He will look with favor on the prayer of the homeless; *
he will not despise their plea.

18

Let this be written for a future generation, *
so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord.

19

For the Lord looked down from his holy place on high; *
from the heavens he beheld the earth;

20

That he might hear the groan of the captive *
and set free those condemned to die;

21

That they may declare in Zion the Name of the Lord, *
and his praise in Jerusalem;

22

When the peoples are gathered together, *
and the kingdoms also, to serve the Lord.

23

He has brought down my strength before my time; *
he has shortened the number of my days;

24

And I said, “O my God,
do not take me away in the midst of my days; *

your years endure throughout all generations.

25

In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, *
and the heavens are the work of your hands;

26

They shall perish, but you will endure;
they all shall wear out like a garment; *

as clothing you will change them,
and they shall be changed;

27

But you are always the same, *
and your years will never end.

28

The children of your servants shall continue, *
and their offspring shall stand fast in your sight.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Reading

Ezek. 34:17-31 (NRSV)

A Reading from the Prophet Ezekiel.

s for you, my flock, thus says the Lord God: I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats: 18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture? When you drink of clear water, must you foul the rest with your feet? 19And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have fouled with your feet? 20Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, 22I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. 25I will make with them a covenant of peace and banish wild animals from the land, so that they may live in the wild and sleep in the woods securely. 26I will make them and the region around my hill a blessing; and I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing. 27The trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase. They shall be secure on their soil; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke, and save them from the hands of those who enslaved them. 28They shall no more be plunder for the nations, nor shall the animals of the land devour them; they shall live in safety, and no one shall make them afraid. 29I will provide for them a splendid vegetation so that they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer suffer the insults of the nations. 30They shall know that I, the Lord their God, am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, says the Lord God. 31You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture and I am your God, says the Lord God.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

13. A Song of Praise Benedictus es, Domine

BCP p. 90

lory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

The Second Reading

Luke 10:38-42 (NRSV)

A Reading from the Gospel According to Luke.

ow as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. 40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” 41But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

lmighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-
kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our creation,
preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;

but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;

for the means of grace,
and for the hope of glory.

And,
we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,

not only with our lips,
but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,

and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

to whom,
with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages.
Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

BCP p. 102/126

lmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia!
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia!

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.Romans 15:13
